"Poppy sales"

A review of The Royal British Legion by Jane Napier written on Saturday 7th of November 2020

Saturday 7th.

No poppy sales in Hessle, so took the bus into the city (Hull) to buy 3 poppies, 1 for myself and 2 for friends. Went to Tesco’s in St. Stephen’s Centre. They were selling poppies at Customer Service. They passed me 3 poppies. My concern is there was no sealed British Legion collection tin/container for my money / donation. Peoples money was being collected in a small open cardboard box lid, although nearby, on the counter, there was an official British Legion sealed container. I attempted to put my coins into the official sealed collection container, but was told to put my coins into the open cardboard box lid which was together with the poppies in the display tray - highly unusual!? I only just hope the money given gets to where people intended it to go - that is, to the British Legion - and not into other people’s pockets.

I placed 12 £1.00 coins into the wide open box lid from the three people I represented. I declined to put a £10.00 note - too tempting for light fingers!?.
